What Ari likes

  • At a recent visit to Children's hospital, the developmental pediatrician asked us what kind of play Ari does. I thought that was an interesting question, especially since I used to ask that question of parents all the time, at my former job. Let's see...
Ari's favorite pass-time right now is to walk around, wherever he is, carrying A THING in each hand. This thing could be anything: his shoes (he loves to carry his boots by the shoe-string), pieces of paper, a wet diaper that I haven't had time to throw away, a crayon, or a sock.
His other favorite pass-time is doing mischief of any kind. If we forget to shut the door to the office, Ari will be there is a heartbeat, pushing buttons on the computer keyboard. In fact, if all of a sudden it becomes very quiet in the house, chances are, that's where he is. When I come in, he looks at me with a coy smile on his face, claiming innocence. During our visit to Children's, it was actually very fortunate that every exam room had a computer. While we were waiting for the doctors, Ari happily familiarized himself with the hospital computers, probably erasing a couple hundred files (just kidding, I don't think he knew how to log in).
Another fertile place for mischief-making is the bathroom. Unrolling toilet paper and ripping it into thousands of shreds is highly satisfying, as is throwing bath toys into the toilet. If mama forgets to close the lid on the toilet or put the roll of toilet paper out of reach, here I come!
As to more conventional activities, Ari likes chasing balls, crashing towers so lovingly built by his mother, playing on his electrical keyboard, and pushing buttons of any kind. He loves playing peek-a-boo by hiding behind my back and then pulling me by the hair to let me know that I need to find him. A enjoys books, although he spends less time looking at them now that he has started walking. His favorite book is a "sing and spin" Old MacDonald Had a Farm, and his favorite song is "If You're Happy and You Know It, Clap Your Hands" (he can't clap his hands yet, but he can stomp his feet). All in all, he can find a way to occupy himself quite happily, especially if his mama and his papa are around.
